Christopher Nolan turns the legend of Odysseus into a sweeping voyage home, with Matt Damon as the king battling gods and monsters to return to those he loves. It is grand and atmospheric yet surprisingly tender about longing and homecoming, the sort of big-screen spectacle made for holding hands in the dark. At 8.5 on IMDb, it delivers awe and heart in equal measure.

Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor anchor this eerie, intimate mystery about a suburban street that is torn from the map and dropped somewhere unknown, leaving one family to cling to each other just to survive. It is atmospheric and quietly moving beneath the strangeness, a thoughtful thriller that rewards watching curled up side by side. Do note that screenings are on the scarcer side this week, so it is worth planning ahead to catch it, and at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes it is well worth the effort.
